Will it transform how we study human communication and culture, or narrow the palette of research options and alter what 'research' means? Some or all of the above? In their keynote address to the 2011 iCS-OII conference, danah boyd and Kate Crawford offer six provocations that they hope can spark conversations about the issues of Big Data. Given the rise of Big Data as both a phenomenon and a methodological persuasion, it is time to start critically interrogating this phenomenon, its assumptions, and its biases. In 1959 beer company Guinness drop several hundred thousand beer bottles into the ocean with promotional messages. Apparently they hoped that people on the beach would become customers. Nearly 8 million people came together across 16 states in the US to form a chain raising money for the hungry and homeless. Each person had to pay $10 for their spot in line. When sales of D.C. comics started falling they came out with a comic title "The Death of Superman". Sales shot back up. Taco Bell paid for an ad in The New York Times that claimed they had bought the liberty bell and were renaming it the "Taco Liberty Bell". Numerous complaints later they admitted it was an April Fools Joke. Not to be outdone, Burger King decided to come out with a Whopper that "better fit the needs of left handed people" by shifting the insides for more optimal weight redistribution. It was also an April Fool's Day joke. Richard Branson decided to launch Virgin Cola by driving a tank down Fifth Ave in NYC and shooting the Coca Cola sign. Half.com, a discount retail website paid the city of Halfway, Oregon to change its name to Half.com for one year. The stunt was successful as eBay bought the website for $300 million. After David Blaine stayed inside a large block of ice in the middle of Times Square for 60 hours he was rushed to the hospital and admitted he would never try something that crazy again. In another crazy marketing stunt, Taco Bell announced that if any piece of the falling Mir Space Station hit their raft in the Pacific they would give every American a free taco. Branson got himself a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records by crossing the English Channel in an amphibious vehicle in 40 minutes. So far no one has been able to beat it. He was paid $1 million by the Dubai Desert Golf Classic to come to their event. He made his first practice shot from the helipad on top of the tallest hotel in the world. After a Swiss referee made a bad call against an English team, the British supermarket chain Asda offered free eye tests to all Swiss citizens. The company's 60th anniversary was marked by skydivers jumping out of a plane while playing the game. Snapple tried to make the world's largest popsicle in Union Square but the temperature was a bit higher than expected and all they got was an 18 ton blob of slush. ProShade, a company that makes sunglasses offered the National Park Service a total of $4 in exchange for being able to paste their logo on each of the president's heads at Mt Rushmore. There was no deal but ProShade got a lot of publicity. To promote the 3rd movie, red wired boxes that played the Mission Impossible theme song were hidden all over Los Angeles. People got scared though and police even ended up exploding some of them! KFC drew their new logo in the desert near Area 51 so that it would be visible in Google Earth. They got a lot of curious viewers. When Burger King took their Whopper of the menu for a day people freaked out. Of course the restaurant got everything on tape and restored order the following day. The gambling website gnuf.com held the world's largest dice roll by dropping two huge dice weighing half a ton from the air onto a mountainside in Greenland. People could watch the roll and bet on the outcome. Travelodge gave any married couple who could legally prove their names were Mary and Joseph one free night in their hotel between Christmas Eve and January 5th. The BBC released footage of flying penguins that were allegedly going to be a part of their new series. They soon admitted, however, that the images were only a hoax. Red Bull had Austrian Felix Baumgartner dive from a helium balloon nearly 25 miles above the Earth. He became the second person in history to break the sound barrier without any engine power and Red Bull became the first sports drink with a space program.

In an advertising push the state news agency Xinhua described as a "public diplomacy campaign" that coincides with President Hu Jintao's visit to the United States this week, China is running a 60-second video on a series of billboard-size screens on Broadway. Some of the screens stay red — with Chinese characters in white — while the video is playing on the other screens with images of Chinese celebrities like the martial-arts movie star Jackie Chan; the basketball player Yao Ming; the astronaut Yang Liwei; and the pianists Lang Lang and Yundi. Xinhua said the video would be shown 15 times an hour, 20 hours a day, through Feb. 14, and on CNN through Feb. 13.

Iconic 1984 Apple Computer Macintosh commercial conceived by Chiat/Day and directed by Ridley Scott was nationally aired on television only once - during the 3rd quarter of the 1984 Super Bowl football game. Based on George Orwell's novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four (authored in 1949) the spot provided the allegory of the new Apple Macintosh computer providing an inspirational creative spark that would free individuals from the overbearing control of "Big Brother" - presumably, IBM's Personal computer. Produced prior to the launch of Skylab, this publicity film featuring astronauts Charles "Pete" Conrad, Joseph P. Kerwin and Paul J. Weitz, gives an overview of the space station and its mission. Skylab was a space station launched and operated by NASA and was the United States' first space station. Skylab orbited the Earth from 1973 to 1979, and included a workshop, a solar observatory, and other systems. It was launched unmanned by a modified Saturn V rocket, with a weight of 169,950 pounds (77 t). Three manned missions to the station, conducted between 1973 and 1974 using the Apollo Command/Service Module (CSM) atop the smaller Saturn IB, each delivered a three-astronaut crew. On the last two manned missions, an additional Apollo / Saturn IB stood by ready to rescue the crew in orbit if it was needed. The station was damaged during launch when the micrometeoroid shield separated from the workshop and tore away, taking one of two main solar panel arrays with it and jamming the other one so that it could not deploy. This deprived Skylab of most of its electrical power, and also removed protection from intense solar heating, threatening to make it unusable. The first crew was able to save it in the first in-space major repair, by deploying a replacement heat shade and freeing the jammed solar panels. Skylab included the Apollo Telescope Mount, which was a multi-spectral solar observatory, Multiple Docking Adapter (with two docking ports), Airlock Module with EVA hatches, and the Orbital Workshop, the main habitable volume. Electrical power came from solar arrays, as well as fuel cells in the docked Apollo CSM. The rear of the station included a large waste tank, propellant tanks for maneuvering jets, and a heat radiator. Numerous scientific experiments were conducted aboard Skylab during its operational life, and crews were able to confirm the existence of coronal holes in the Sun. The Earth Resources Experiment Package (EREP) was used to view the Earth with sensors that recorded data in the visible, infrared, and microwave spectral regions. Thousands of photographs of Earth were taken, and records for human time spent in orbit were extended. Plans were made to refurbish and reuse Skylab, using the Space Shuttle to boost its orbit and repair it. However, development of the Shuttle was delayed, and Skylab reentered Earth's atmosphere and disintegrated in 1979, with debris striking portions of Western Australia. Post-Skylab NASA space laboratory projects included Spacelab, Shuttle-Mir, and Space Station Freedom (later merged into the International Space Station).
